The survivors suffer

I just watched the film, The Divide. I chose to watch it, because the trailer attracted me. As a sci-fi fan, it's hard to resist such mystery. The film is excellent, however it is extremely disgusting. If I could choose again, I wouldn't have watched it.

The most horrible thing is not the destruction of the living environment in this case. The most horrible thing is the destruction of morality. Through out the film, again and again it shows us that people are pushed to do unexpected extrem things in extrem situations. But even in extrem situation, it doesn't make it right to accept the moral corruption. Everyone started to corrupt from something small, step by step, they lost their hope. They stopped thinking how to find a way to leave anymore. They think the man who was first in charge of the food and water supply is evil. Because he keeps the food storage. They think that it is not right for him to keep things from them, even he does provide enough to keep them alive. It is not good to keep things from them. But he does do a good job in distributing food and water to keep them alive. At last, they found out the food and water storage. They keep the guy away. They even torture him to get the code to open the door. Then they finally succeeded in accessing all the food and water. Those strong ones don't care for the weaks any more. They do whatever they want. In this film, you can see through the whole process of self-destruction morally, mentally, and physically. It is not those already died in the explosion suffer, it is those who survive suffer. If you die in the explosion or radiation, all your suffering is not long. Compare to those who survive in this room, they are the lucky one. The survivors ended up suffer moral destruction. This is the most horrible part and the greatest suffer. It's sad and helpless. Eventually, only one of them got out of the room, she wore the only anti-radiation suit and left. She was outside, she didn't have to worry about those horrible people in the room. But she became all alone, no friends, no family, no love ones. She survived again and yet her soul perhaps had already died in the room. How long can she live in a destroyed environment? What is her purpose to live?

The most uncomfortable of the film, it is the darkest and ugliest, side of the moral corrupted human. It just hurts your mind to know it.

Are You a Bad Speller?

Some people spell well. They seldom make  mistakes of such kind, which, most people believe, is a natural result of good education. Meanwhile, other tens of millions are terrible spellers, unfortunately including me, and they will never be significantly improved, even if built-in spellcheckers are available in almost every computer operating system.

Studies show that approximately up to 15% of population are bad spellers. According to Professor Monaco, a scientist at the Wellcome Centre Trust for Human Genetics, Oxford University, spelling problems root in a piece of DNA named KIAA0319. “We all carry it, but 15 percent of the population have a slightly different version from normal.”

It turns out, as always, that education cannot beat genes. If we are computers, then genes are hardwares that constrain what software could do. It might be hard to comprehend or accept, but it’s true that almost every limit we are embarrassed of lies partly on genes we carry and we cannot change them through our life.

Fortunately, though KIAA0319 influences the ability to spell, its other side-effects are almost next to none. This helps explain why so many great minds achieve more than those who spell well do.

It’s well understood that spelling (and grammar accuracy as well) is more difficult for second language learners. And now we know it’s especially difficult for part of them, at least 15% of them. But it should be noted that bad spelling itself won’t destroy anyone’s creativity, and better spelling itself doesn’t guarantee anything. (In fact, bad spellers are more deft at comprehending the “Can You Read This” passage, which might well be a good indicator of creativity.)

While learning a foreign language[, we will encounter more predicaments besides the spelling headache, many of which are also stemmed from genes. For example, some people can hardly discern some specific sound differences which others feel clearly distinctive. However, this only means some have to struggle harder than others do, and it should never be the reason to give up.

奥地利特色之 Heuriger

回想一下，我确实算是幸福，由于姨丈的教父很喜欢到 Heuriger 吃饭喝葡萄酒享受，来了这么久，我周末有份被邀请去 Heuriger 四五次了。由于 Wiki 里面并没有中文版的 Heuriger，所以就写篇文章分享一下所见所闻，并介绍一下 Heuriger 这一奥地利特色。


1. Heuriger 是什么？

 heurig 一词意为“本年”，Heuriger 是一个特别的小酒馆餐厅，这里专门提供本年的新葡萄酒。于是加了 -er 结尾就成了名词。


2. Heuriger 的外观与装饰

一眼看上去 Heurigen 人提供一种舒适的感觉，一般来说就是间大屋，有花园，部分 Heurigen 提供枱凳在花园让客人可以在花园品酒。有些 Heurigen 花园里面还有千秋和跷跷板让客人的小孩子可以在花园里面玩。室内主要采用木质的家具，让人感觉很舒适温暖，感觉很温馨。

3. Heuriger 的营业时间

Heuriger 和普通餐厅或酒馆有法律上执照的区别，不是随随便便就能开。一家 Heuriger 所供应的葡萄酒必须是自家酿制的葡萄酒，也就是说，Heuriger 的老板同时是葡萄园的老板。Heuriger 里面所供应的食物也有一定限制。Heurigen 的也不是天天开的，所以去之前，你必须知道该 Heuriger 在什么时候营业，要不然，去到发现根本没有开门。一般来说，一家 Heuriger 一年就在一时间段内开门， 这和葡萄的种植还有葡萄酒的酿造时间有关，这样也保证了各家 Heurigen 都有生意。比如，Perchtoldsdorf 这个村里面某条街，整条街都是 Heurigen 全都开了的话就不行了。营业时间在执照上面也有限制。还有一个特色是，开门的 Heurigen 都会在门口插一条细木杆挂着一些草叶的装饰，他们不是叫开门，是叫 ausstrecken，意为把木杆插出来。如果该 Heuriger 有供应红葡萄酒，木杆会挂有红色的饰物。还有，Heuriger 的店名一般是用老板的姓氏来命名的。现在奥地利多了不少没有 Heuriger 执照，但是抄袭 Heuriger 风格的餐厅，这些餐厅的酒是另来买来的，不是自家酿造的，这些餐厅可能还会提供葡萄酒以外的酒，这些都违反的正式 Heuriger 的规定。当然他们令 Heuriger 的执照，就没什么所谓，这也不代表他们提供的东西不好，只是不是传统意义上的 Heuriger。我暂时也未去过这类仿 Heuriger 的餐厅。

4. Heuriger 的食物，饮品与服务

Heuriger 除了提供本年新酿的葡萄酒，还提供了酿造葡萄酒中的不同阶段产物。首先是没有酒精成分的葡萄汁 Most，原来用来酿酒的葡萄汁是那么甜的！一般会提供两个玻璃瓶或壶，一个是葡萄汁，一个是清水（自来水，这边的水质好，可以直接喝），自己根据个人喜好加水稀释喝。当然这些葡萄汁不是鲜榨的那种，是存起来可用作酿酒那种，是不是脚踩榨汁我就不知道了。第二是 Sturm，这算是酿造的第二阶段产物，看起来很浑浊，因此有 Sturm （英文：storm —— 暴风）的名字，一摇杯子，沉淀物就像被暴风卷起那样。Sturm 的酒精含量较低，大约 8% 左右，味道偏甜。第三阶段产物是 Staubige （英文：dusty —— 多尘的），由于 Staubige 所含的沉淀物比 Sturm 要少了很多，但是对比最终的 Wien 来说还是略为浑浊，因此被形容为“多尘的”。Staubige 的酒精含量为 10% 左右，比 Wein 要甜一点，但是对比 Sturm 的话，已经没什么甜味，喝起来味道已经非常像酒了。最后，当然就是成品 Wein 了，酒精含量大概是 12%。我来了几个月都几乎忘记英文单词 wine 是怎样正确拼写了，由于维也纳的德文名是 Wien，葡萄酒是 Wein，然后英文 wine 读音和德文一样也是一样。饮品除了葡萄酒产物就没其他了。虽然啤酒对于当地人很普及，但是在 Heuriger 里面是绝对没有供应的。

以前 Heuriger 是没有食物供应的，只卖酒，客人自己带冷盘食物（火腿，烟肉，芝士，面包，水果等）到 Heuriger 品酒，用餐，聊天，享受生活。后来 Heuriger 才慢慢有了食物提供。一家 Heuriger 里面必有的食物是奥地利地道食品 Winer Schnizel，就是炸用锤子打扁的猪扒，当然还有炸鸡扒等等。还有 Schweinsbraten，烤猪肉，和 Knödeln，用马铃薯还有面粉什么做成的味道淡淡有点咸但是香味不错，一般用来配肉吃的。我还吃过蘑菇版的 Schnizel，是一颗一颗的炸蘑菇。我上次还试过 Blutwurst，血肠，英文叫 Black Pudding 好听很多，虽然名字比较吓人，但是味道其实非常好。每间 Heuriger 提供的食物种类也不同，但是一般都是传统食物，当然各种沙律，各种不同类的芝士都有。如果不是正餐时段去的话，纯粹想品酒的话，有些人会芝士配葡萄酒那样品尝的，当然火腿那些应该都会有，不过我每次都是午餐时段去。除了这些咸食之外，还有甜品供应的，朱古力蛋糕，树莓蛋糕，树莓排等等的，还有吃完充满幸福感的热甜品。我的最爱是 Mohr im Hemd，软软的朱古力小蛋糕里面有融化了朱古力酱，然后上面又再淋了暖暖的朱古力酱，然后旁边有雪白的奶油。Mohr im Hemd 是奥地利地道的甜品哦！上次还试过了 Eis im Eierkuchen，大概就是鸡蛋面粉浆加热做成的 pancake 里面包着雪糕，看起来像 Omelet 那样，然后在淋上朱古力酱，还配上奶油。这个也很好吃，但是个人喜欢 Mohr im Hemd 更多。

Heuriger 里面主要是自助服务，食物一般是要自己去卖食物那里购买 counter 和付款后自己拿回桌，餐具也是自己在 conter 拿，如果所点的食物需要一点时间才做好，这样才会做好送到你的桌上。饮品则可以直接在桌上点。感觉姨丈的教父每次带我们去的 Heuriger，他都认识那个老板。虽然说 Heurigern 不怎么提供服务，但是可以感觉到店员对人都非常友好亲切。

Mohr im Hemd (网上有好多看起来不同的版本，但是这个和我吃过那个最像，当然我吃那个是有好几个朱古力蛋糕，分量比较多，不是单单一小个。)

P.S. 由于看到什么都拍，这样人家看起来会觉得好古怪，所以我每次去都没有拍照。图片都源于网上，但是经过细心挑选，所以图片所见的和我所见的差不了多少。

介绍 Chrome OS 三个默认字体 Arimo、Tinos、Cousine

前晚下载了 Lime 并写了 live USB 在本本上测试 Chrome OS。我还真是第一次在实体机上用 Chrome OS，新闻测评演示倒是看得多。

觉得初次使用的向导很不错，教用户使用 Chromebook 的 touchpad 是可以多点触摸。

由于我是直接用 USB 跑，可以想象响应速度当然没有 Chromebook 使用的 SSD 那样快，但是感觉还是不错。由于我在墙外，我可以预想到墙外使用 Chromebook 用来简单的上网肯定会很方便。

不满的是字体渲染，没有 Ubuntu 好看，没我的 Windows 7 开 MacType 好看。不过，我不知道这个是 lime 编译出来的 Chrome OS 问题还是 Chrome OS 本身就是这样。网页平滑滚动比我在 Chrome 浏览器要流畅一点。我个人觉得 Chrome OS 很无聊，用起来就像一直把浏览器最大化，但是实际使用电脑时，我真的不喜欢这样一直把浏览器窗口最大化。这样真的没必要，而且看起来不舒服，遇到那些跟着窗口大小把文字对应水平宽度换行的网页更加悲剧。

好吧，让我最耳目一新的是 Chrome OS 的默认字体。所使用的字体很赞，而不是以前给 Android 用的 droid。我真的觉得 droid 这款字体不好看，很无聊。Chrome OS 里面，Sans Serif，Serif，Fix-width 三个家族的字体都是出自同一个字体设计师，Steve Matteson。Arimo，Tinos，Cousine 这三款字体是冲着 Arial，Times New Roman，Courier New 这三个老字体来的。他们分别尺寸上（用“尺寸”一词可能不太准确）和三位长老对应的。新的字体给人全新的感觉，也配合 Chrome OS，Chromebook 的宣传性，摒弃旧概念。

虽然我很喜欢用 Chrome，但是 Chrome OS 这产物在现阶段宣传效果多于实用性。

System Control Optimisation 一个补丁让你的 WebOS 设备跑得更流畅

个人评论：这是一个极其威猛的补丁！

个人实际使用感觉：系统确实跑得流畅了很多，用久了也不会觉得卡的感觉。

昨天由于出门时候忘记了穿口袋里有 iPod Touch 的夹克，于是等上课前没事做，就更新了一下 Preware 源看看有没有新软件或补丁玩玩，于是就发现了 System Control Optimisation 补丁，一看是新补丁，在看一下描述，好像很威猛哦！

以下是我的翻译（中文不好，质量不一定高，但是大意是准确的）：

这个补丁会改变 WebOS 中的 Linux 内核处理内存的方式，让其更加合适于长期保持开启状态并使用固态存储的设备。

有两个版本，一个标明给 Legacy Devices （Pre/Pixi/PixiPlus）用的，另一个则是给有至少512MB内存的新设备（PrePlus/Pre2/Veer/Pre3/TouchPad）用的。

按照描述这个补丁确实好威猛，但是会影响系统的稳定性么？实际真的有改善么？这些都不能看出来。于是我就 google 一下，找到作者本人给出的详细解释。

这个补丁会在你的设备创建一个名为“sysctl.conf”的文件。

sysctl.conf 文件是一个用于 Linux 下的，去改变 Linux 内核处理所谓的“pages”的方式。

Pages 就像应用程序加载到内存里面的数据。

当你打开一个程序，程序和响应的磁盘数据就会被加载到内存里，以作快速加载。

当你关闭一个程序，内核就会决定哪部分 pages 继续留在内存，保留多久，哪些部分则丢弃。

WebOS 在这方面从没有被优化过，内核处理 pages 和缓存的方式依旧和其他 Linux 发行版一样。（当我看到这里的时候，我感到非常惊讶！开发人员这也太不负责任了吧！）

但是 WebOS 和其他 Linux 发行版不同，它是运行在一个固态存储器上，并且运行着未经编译的 html5 和 javascript，这种情况下很容易产生内存泄漏。

于是我花了4个月时间去为 WebOS 优化内存管理，去让系统跑得更快和减少内存泄漏。

以下是我作的改动。

简单地说就是：系统会跑得更加流畅，不会像打嗝那样卡卡卡着。

基本上 WebOS 会被内核控制得更加节省资源，内存泄漏会被内核更加激进和经常被清理掉。

2012 New Year in Austria

祝在看这篇博文的朋友新年快乐！

今年过年很特别，生命中第一次在国外过年。整体感觉是比我以往在广州都要好玩和热闹。

12月31日入夜大概6点左右，就已经能在街上听到或偶尔看到烟花燃放了。

12月31日晚是和这边的亲戚都聚在其中一个阿姨家里先吃大餐，然后大人玩扑克，小孩看电影或在街上和花园放小烟花和爆竹。晚餐：前菜有越南式的春卷，沙律，面包，烟熏三文鱼和越式猪骨粉；主菜有烤肉，烤鸭，彩椒炒虾，chicken nugget（麦乐鸡），甜品有自己做的蛋糕。饭后，虽然我和扑克接触的时间比一般人都要多，但由于我和扑克的关系只存在于 cardistry 和 magic，完全没有兴趣于玩牌赌博。所以我就到地下室和小朋友（表弟表妹）齐齐看《加勒比海盗3》，虽然我看过好几次了，还是头一次看德文版，听得不是很明白，不过没什么所谓，都知道剧情了。然后在花园玩了一会儿爆竹。我见大人们玩牌的牌那么旧，然后恰好我平时练 cardistry 那副牌也开始有点粘了（其实也是非常新，对于他们玩牌来说一点也不粘。）。恰好换牌后第一局，某姨丈抽到2只ace，很好牌，赢了，意想不到地给了我1欧，哈哈。然后时间差不多，我和小朋友和 uncle Chris，uncle Christian 都在花园玩爆竹了。玩着玩着，时间就差不多了，表妹一号的男友也到了，他带了 sushi 来哦！大家看到 sushi 都很兴奋，哈哈。然后开始在花园放大烟花了。隔壁左邻右里也都放大烟花了！也能看到远处的各个地方大家也开始放烟花了，非常热闹。然后喝香槟庆祝，有趣的是，其中有一瓶香槟是俄国的，颜色首先很深，比较怪，然后喝起来味道也很怪，我于是跟着 uncle Chris 喝了一口就把它倒掉了，换喝荔枝味的。然后大人就 toast，小朋友和阿姨就亲面颊和拥抱。其实我觉得西方的这些礼仪很好，人和人的距离近很多。人和人之间的感情很直白地表达。烟花之后又有得吃了，当然就不是像正餐那样。有充满亮点的 sushi，正餐没吃完的烤肉，烤鸭，鲜彩椒，火腿，烟肉，芝士，面包。这个算是 2012 年的第一个“早餐”了，真的很早啊，在凌晨。

如果在广州家里庆祝就真的没有这样热闹了。

当然这边5个家庭，庆祝什么都比广州热闹。

新年愿望嘛，当然是以后能留在这边生活啦，不过 visa 到7月底就过期。即使不能留下，也是一年美好的回忆。最直接的新年愿望是希望有鬼妹女友啦，哈哈。

逛 Kahlenberg

25号那天开始发烧，然后病了两天。这天有精神出去逛了。和表妹二号先去了 Kahlenberg 然后去了 Türkenschanzpark 。在 Kahlenberg 上面，我第一次看到这种制作纪念品的机器。于是弄了一个。提示要入 1.5 欧。我本身已经好奇，为什么要两个银币，难道成品是混合两个银币的？原来 1 欧是收费，50 cents 才是原材料。由于没有相机，所以没有什么图片，但是提供网上找到该景点的图片 link 就是了。
